Hello, my name is Mike and I live next door at 1016 Ingle. I moved here in 2007 and have had multiple neighbors next door, both owners and renters alike. This is a beautiful neighborhood and I havevalways appreciated the nice sense of community here until Brandon and his family moved in. They occupied the residence for a few months and then essentially turned the property into a motel. Over the past year, I have had over 100 strangers come and go next door (more on that later) and then it goes unoccupied for unknown periods of time. This destroys the feel of an otherwise comfortable residential neighborhood. I owned my own landscaping business for many years and am very familiar with what a situation like this can do to destruct a neighborhood in terms of devaluing the property itself as well as bordering residences. Not to mention, quality of life is affected, as I can attest to, in having Brandon operating as a lackluster “house manager” rather than a neighbor. I do not expect or ask for any grand gestures, and likewise, but when I see something going wrong, I say something.
One of the first things he did upon moving in was to cut a trench in his cement driveway along the foundation of his house. When I noticed, I advised him on how he could better resolve diverting the water path, because, as I mentioned, I have years of experience in dealing with this sort of matter. Brandon ignored my advice and now, so much water saturates his crawlspace that it must be pumped out. The pump near the road is always spewing water and as the brick from his chimney dissolves due to water erosion, it has created an unsightly red stream that seeps down my driveway.
The second thing that he did, again, despite my advice, was to randomly cut a trench in his backyard without any regard given to where a humongous tree was growing in the backyard. You do not have to be a landscaper to understand that when you cut major roots to a tree—it begins to die— and consequently causes catastrophic damage to the surrounding area. Brandon did not heed my warning in favor of both of our sakes and soon after, a secondary trunk crashed onto his roof. A few months later, another secondary branch fell—this time onto my pickup truck, custom stone wall and patio, causing thousands of dollars in damage. His nonchalant attitude was very that it was my problem.
The latest problem that he has created and remained unaccountable for is that the direction of water from one of his improper excavations is flooding my shop. I am currently renovating the building into a pottery studio and as a recent retiree, I am sick of dealing with issues that could simply be avoided. Renters looking in my window, things missing from my front yard, staring at me while I work in my garden. Can you imagine? Well, if you buy or rent the property next door, you will have to. These issues will be inherited by the next occupant unless Brandon holds himself accountable for his mistakes by repairing what he has done to the property. I don’t plan on incurring thousands of dollars in damages again without legal action.
